Okay, but what do we do about it now?

The purpose of my book was to raise awareness of a problem. How to solve it is another story. In fact, many people have questioned the purpose in studying a subject when we have no workable solution. Therefore, I’ve dedicated this section of the site, “The Future” to talking about the solutions that have been proposed, and their merits in the light of halacha.

Even the Satmar Rebbe, author of the classic and definitive work on the topic of Zionism in halacha, did not claim to have a solution, and left matters up to Hashem:

I have also quoted the words of the Gemara in Sanhedrin 98a: “The son of Dovid will not come until the lowly kingdom departs from Israel.” Rashi explains: “Until Israel has no form of government, even an unimportant and weak one.” So we see that before the coming of moshiach that lowly state will disappear, since his coming is impossible otherwise, and the state is delaying the true redemption. And a similar thing is explicit in the words of the Rambam in Igeres Teiman. But we need Heavenly mercy so that that state should come to an end only through power from above, from Hashem, not through the nations, because if it happens through the nations, Heaven forbid, it would obviously be a tremendous danger to the Jewish people. May Hashem have mercy on us and all of His people Israel. (Vayoel Moshe, Hakdama p. 8)

When these words were written in 1959, it was hard to imagine how the state could come to a peaceful end. But today, that possibility is just around the corner. Arabs already outnumber Jews in historic Palestine (including the West Bank and Gaza). If these areas are annexed to the state and the Arabs are granted citizenship, it will cease to be a Jewish state.

Of course, easier said than done. Having experienced the cruelty and brutality of terror groups such as Hamas in the October 7th attack, how can we be confident that living side by side with Arabs in one country will not lead to more of the same?

As we study the proposals that have been raised, let’s keep an open mind, and hope for the Heavenly mercy and help from above of which the Satmar Rebbe spoke.

One response to “Okay, but what do we do about it now?”

  1. R’ Tzvi Dushinksy had a solution which many still propose today; To get the UN involved.
